Becoming a parent can bring many changes, both physically and emotionally. It is common to feel overwhelmed, anxious, low, or simply not like yourself after having a baby. These feelings can happen to anyone, and they do not mean you are doing anything wrong.
Many parents today are going through this without the level of support that existed in the past. What used to be a “village” of family, neighbours and community is not always as visible, and it’s easy to feel isolated or alone in how you are feeling.
Connecting with others can make a real difference. Parent and child groups, local community spaces, or even a short conversation with another parent can help reduce isolation and remind you that others are going through similar experiences.
If you feel you need extra support, it is important to reach out. You can speak to your GP or your Public Health Nurse, who can guide you and connect you with appropriate services. There are also local supports available, including counselling and family support services.
Hill Street Family Resource Centre offers free counselling and family support in a welcoming, community setting, and may be a helpful starting point.
Reaching out is a positive step, for you and your child. Support is available, and you do not have to go through this on your own.
