Lourdes Youth & Community Services (LYCS)

Lourdes Youth & Community Services, usually known as LYCS, is a community development organisation based in Dublin’s North East Inner City.

LYCS has been supporting local people since 1984 through education, training, early years care, youth work, adult learning, community employment and social development opportunities.

Their work is rooted in the local community and aims to create opportunities for people of different ages and stages to learn, connect, build confidence and take part in community life.

Early Years Centre

LYCS provides an Early Years service for children from 6 months to 5.5 years of age.

The service uses a child-led approach to curriculum and planning, supporting children’s development, learning and wellbeing in their early years.

This may be useful for families looking for early years care and education in the North East Inner City.

Adult Education

LYCS offers free adult education courses for adults living and working in inner-city Dublin.

These classes give adults the chance to learn a new skill, try something creative, build confidence, meet other people and take part in a supportive community learning environment.

Adult education options may include wellbeing classes, arts and crafts, sewing, painting, stained glass, computers, English as a Second Language and other skills-based or creative courses.

Community Training Centre

LYCS runs a Community Training Centre for young people aged 16–21.

The training centre focuses on vocational programmes leading to QQI Major Awards at Levels 3 and 4. This can support young people who want to build skills, confidence and pathways towards further training or employment.

Training areas may include employability skills, general learning, sport and recreation, and information and communications technology.

Community Employment Scheme

The LYCS Community Employment Scheme supports people who are long-term unemployed to get back to work.

The scheme offers part-time work placements in LYCS and other community projects in the North East Inner City, helping participants build routine, confidence, experience and practical skills.

Global Citizenship Education

LYCS also provides Global Citizenship Education, supporting people to explore links between their local community and the wider world.

This work encourages discussion, participation, critical thinking and active citizenship, helping people connect local experiences with wider social justice, equality and human rights issues.

Community Connection

LYCS is more than one programme. It is a community-based organisation that brings education, care, training, creativity and participation together.

It may be especially useful for parents, young people and adults who want to return to learning, access childcare, build confidence, take part in community life, or explore training and employment pathways.
