ICON, the Inner City Organisations Network, is a community network based in Dublin’s North East Inner City.
It brings together local community projects, tenant groups, voluntary organisations and individuals living and working in the area. ICON works to make sure that local voices are heard and that the community has an active role in decisions and developments that affect the North East Inner City.
ICON works from a community development approach.
This means supporting people, groups and organisations to identify local needs, build confidence, strengthen capacity and take collective action on issues affecting the area.
ICON supports community development through local programmes, working groups, research, advocacy and collaboration between services and residents.
ICON advocates on issues affecting people in the North East Inner City.
This can include housing, disadvantage, poverty, unemployment, community safety, drug and alcohol issues, equality, local development and access to services.
Rather than speaking only as one organisation, ICON helps bring community voices together so local concerns can be heard more clearly.
ICON’s working groups are developed around needs identified in the community.
These groups create space for local people, organisations and services to discuss issues, plan joint action and work towards change.
ICON has also been involved in campaigning and research work on issues such as housing, accommodation, drug treatment, community development and support for families of children with autism and additional needs.
ICON produces community-based research and publications that highlight local experiences and needs.
Recent work has included research on the experiences of parents and family members of children with autism and additional needs in the North East Inner City.
This kind of research helps show what families and communities are experiencing, and can support better planning, funding and services.
ICON also supports local groups and organisations by helping build connections, share information and strengthen collaboration.
This can be useful for community projects, tenant groups, resident-led initiatives and services that want to work together on shared issues.
